Mountain Climbing British Columbia
Mountains of the Coast: Photographs of Remote Corners of the Coast Mountains by John Baldwin, The Coast Mountains, stretching along British Columbia's western edge, from the Alaska Panhandle to Vancouver, are the most mysterious and remote in western Canada. Inaccessible by car, and featuring some of the highest peaks in BC, the mountains begin as low forested hills whose dark green slopes rise up from the sea. Inland at the heads of long fiords, sharper summits reach above treeline. Beyond this lies the backbone of the range, where the mountains are sheathed in snow year-round and surrounded by vast icefields up to 1,200 square kilometres in size. They are a scenic wonder to be admired from a distance and a wild unknown to be left alone. Mountains of the Coast takes the reader past the lush valleys, up through the treacherous crevasses and across immense ice to the very summits of these towering peaks. The guide is none other than John Baldwin, one of BC's premier mountaineers, who has hiked, climbed and skied these mountains for more than twenty-five years. Here are stories of first ascents, sudden blizzards, rumbling glaciers and dangerous ski traverses over icefields, side-by-side with peaceful scenes of flowering heather and alpine flowers, vistas of sunsets washing russet over snowfields and icefalls, and chance encounters with mountain goats. Baldwin shares both the severe beauty of these wild places and the thrill of being the first person to set foot on peaks where few have dared to tread. Brimming over with dramatic and spectacular scenic photographs, Mountains of the Coast is a breathtaking journey that will appeal to mountain climbers, outdoor enthusiasts and armchair explorers alike.
